No todo esta en nuestras manos // It's not all in our hands

Ayer nuestra solicitud para sacar a los 12 internos integrantes del Dinosaurios Teatro para estrenar su primera obra – ‘ASCO’ – fue rebotada por la Dirección Nacional por razones de seguridad.

El grupo consiste de 10 internos adultos de condena máxima (15-30 años) y dos de condena mediana (5-15 años), incluyendo un menor de edad. La mayoría son reincidentes y están en la primer mitad de su condena, pero también la mayoría tiene un historial de comportamiento conflictivo dentro del penal. Justamente por eso ellos son los integrantes del Dinosaurios Teatro. Nuestra iniciativa Dinosaurios Teatro cae bajo el programa reeducativo del Sistema Penitenciario para ofrecer un componente de ‘reeducación’ – cosa que vemos y traducimos a crear un estímulo provocando el crecimiento intelectual, la reflexión, y la creación de un espacio de libertad a través del componente físico y confidencial de nuestra propuesta teatral. Tras la fundación del grupo han ido dos años de talleres de actuación en el penal, que se daban entre dos y cinco veces por semana, incluyendo durante los últimos cinco meses del proceso de montaje de ‘ASCO’. Estando a dos años del inicio de este proceso y esperanzados todos a salir a estrenar la obra fue un re-encuentro con la realidad el ‘no’ de la Dirección Nacional. Un re-encuentro con los hechos y antecedentes judiciales y penales de nuestros actores, un re-encuentro con las bases del porqué hacemos teatro en la cárcel – justamente para apoyar a ese sector tan estereotipado que se encontraba en el círculo vicioso de actitudes violentas – y con la realidad de que la decisión final no la tenemos en mano nosotros.

Pero ¿quién dijo que no habrá estreno? Pues ¡claro que sí! Si los Dinosaurios no pueden ir al público traeremos el público dónde ellos! El estreno de ‘ASCO’ se planificaba el viernes 25 de marzo en co-producción y dentro del Centro Cultural de España en Nicaragua (CCEN) ubicada en Managua. Ahora ‘ASCO’ se estrenará el jueves19 de mayo dentro del Sistema Penitenciario Matagalpa en saludo al Dia de la Madre frente a un público civil. It's not all in our hands

Our request for an escorted day-leave for the twelve inmates participating in Dinosaurios Teatro’s first play ASCO (DISGUST) was not agreed to yesterday by the National Prison Direction for security reasons.

Our prison theater group Dinosaurios consists of ten adult inmates on maximum penalties (15-30 years) and two on medium penalties (5-15 years), including one juvenile offender. The majority are repeated offenders and in the first half of their sentence. The majority is also known for conflictive in-prison behavior which is part of the reason they were put up with our theater initiative. Dinosaurios Teatro – our theater-in-prison program – has become part of the Matagalpan Penitentiary’s re-educative program. We translate this prison term ‘re-education’ into creating stimuli that provoke intellectual growth, reflection, and the creation of a free spaces within confinement through a process of reestablishing confidence and trust based on physical and emotional exercise. Since the founding of the group we’ve voluntarily been giving two years of in-prison acting workshops twice to five times a week, including the last five months of rehearsing for ‘DISGUST’. After these two years, and more than excited for the planned opening performance, the national direction’s ‘no’ was a reencounter with reality – a reencounter with the deeds and judicial-penal antecedents of our actors, with the bases upon which we fundament our reasons to do theater in prison - exactly to provide something, anything to these long-sentenced men - and the reality that we’re not in control of the final decisions.

But who said there won’t be an opening performance? Of course there will! If the Dinosaurios aren’t allowed to come to the audience, we’ll bring the audience to them! The opening performance of ‘DISGUST’ was planned for March 25th in co-production with and at the Cultural Centre of Spain in Nicaragua (CCEN) in Managua. Now ‘DISGUST’ will live its première at the Matagalpan Penintentiary in front of family and a public audience on May 19th celebrating Mother's Day. We hope that the people who’ve been helping us and following us on the internet and in the press will stick with us and come to see the play inside!
