No todo esta en nuestras manos // It's not all in our hands

It's not all in our hands

Our request for an escorted day-leave for the twelve inmates participating in Dinosaurios Teatro’s first play ASCO (DISGUST) was not agreed to yesterday by the National Prison Direction for security reasons.

Our prison theater group Dinosaurios consists of ten adult inmates on maximum penalties (15-30 years) and two on medium penalties (5-15 years), including one juvenile offender. The majority are repeated offenders and in the first half of their sentence. The majority is also known for conflictive in-prison behavior which is part of the reason they were put up with our theater initiative. Dinosaurios Teatro – our theater-in-prison program – has become part of the Matagalpan Penitentiary’s re-educative program. We translate this prison term ‘re-education’ into creating stimuli that provoke intellectual growth, reflection, and the creation of a free spaces within confinement through a process of reestablishing confidence and trust based on physical and emotional exercise. Since the founding of the group we’ve voluntarily been giving two years of in-prison acting workshops twice to five times a week, including the last five months of rehearsing for ‘DISGUST’. After these two years, and more than excited for the planned opening performance, the national direction’s ‘no’ was a reencounter with reality – a reencounter with the deeds and judicial-penal antecedents of our actors, with the bases upon which we fundament our reasons to do theater in prison - exactly to provide something, anything to these long-sentenced men - and the reality that we’re not in control of the final decisions.

But who said there won’t be an opening performance? Of course there will! If the Dinosaurios aren’t allowed to come to the audience, we’ll bring the audience to them! The opening performance of ‘DISGUST’ was planned for March 25th in co-production with and at the Cultural Centre of Spain in Nicaragua (CCEN) in Managua. Now ‘DISGUST’ will live its première at the Matagalpan Penintentiary in front of family and a public audience on May 19th celebrating Mother's Day. We hope that the people who’ve been helping us and following us on the internet and in the press will stick with us and come to see the play inside!

If you'd like to attend the opening performance in prison, pleas send your personal data (name, passport number, ocupation) to lleca.teatro@gmail.com before April 9th, so we can get due authorization for your entry. You can also ask any questions or send requests for more information to us, or publish them on the 'event' page of the opening night on our Facebook page 'Lleca Teatro' (embedded in the title of this blog). Hope to see you there!

Retratos/Portraits Gabriela Mistral // Gira de Conciertos/Concert Tour Nicaragua Jacqueline Castro - Chilean singer/Cantante Chilena

“RETRATOS GABRIELA MISTRAL // JACQUELINE CASTRO RAVELO”

- Jacqueline Castro Ravelo

POTRAITS: GABRIELA MISTRAL // JACQUELINE CASTRO RAVELO

Sung poems of the Chilean poet Gabriela Mistral

“Gabriela Mistral was the first non-Western woman to receive the Nobel prize for literature in 1945.

So colorful in her ideas, she sublimely spread her knowledge and art, something that wasn’t very welcome in the profoundly patriarchal Latin American system. She found much resistance to her in the closed writers circles, above all in Chili, which explains why she receive the National Literature prize six years after her Nobel prize.

In Latin America thousands of schools bear her name. Lots of poets were her students, among whom Pablo Neruda, who was acquainted with Russian literature thanks to her.

Gabriela Mistral was surrounded by artists, culture workers, and in the same way by her people from the Elqui Valley – children and common people from the villages she was invited to. Little conventional and of sharp tongue she was invited by all continents and important cultural institutions to give courses and workshops. She was a great critic of what was going on in the world, and as a big opponent of the second world war atrocities she organized people to help the war come to an end.

For me, Jacqueline Castro, the step from folklore singer to composer started end 2005. It was the 60th anniversary of Gabriela having received the Nobel prize and in Chilean circles nothing indicated that there would be a ceremony to remember her as a Chilean pride. Together with some painters, poets and other artists we organized a Hommage to Gabriela Mistral in Delft, Holland – my hometown – with the help of the Chiliean Embassy. Later we organized the recording of five of her poems made songs on the CD “Tambor Indio” with young composers in Delft. In May 2006 I organized a short tour to Cuba, Canada and the United States, where Gabriela Mistral died.

Now, four years later, I’ve expanded the repertory with my own compositions based on her poems. Discovering her and fascinating myself with the simplicity, authenticity and justice in her poems, and her critical vision of the world I selected the most wonderful poems. The program, beside concerts, may hence also lend itself to do singing and Latin American poetry workshops.” - Jacqueline Castro Ravelo.

Agentes de Cambio - Actors of Change

Hello everybody!

Past weekend we had our first encounter with the Matagalpan sexual diversity activist group Actors of Change (agentes del cambio) to talk about their desires of making and presenting a play. Artistic director Mick Sarria agreed to help them voluntarily with the direction and writing of the play centered around the theme of sexual diversity. LLECA´s artistic outset is to break off from educationalist/pamphletarian theatre - art-as-art, we´re convinced, can also speak of social inequalities and discrepansies in other idioms than the political-educationalist one. After they elaborated on their ideas and desires we elaborated on our modus operandi and our artistic principles and conceptualizations. We agreed with the AoC that the play will thus have no uniform message but that its aim is to confront and move the audience into reflecting on the personhood of the sexually diverse, to take the audience on an emotive trip into the heart of their doubts and internal conflicts. That the play is meant to transcend the mere desire of educating an audience, and the ambition is to make an artistic product with conceptual bases that can be presented and exported nationally as well as internationally - that they will constitute momentarily (or if they decide so permanently) a theater group in which activism and actorship can be combined. Based on the first physical practice yesterday and the specific desire of the AoC to place the play´s central conflict in a religious context, the play will be a collective creation probably centering around two childhood friends. Though both of them accompanied the local priest at mass one of them becomes a street corner transsexual prostitute, and the other an indecisive intern of the seminary. The seminarist struggles with his antagonistic feelings of jealousy and repudiance of the transsexual, while on the other hand confronting his internal conflict with the church. Intimacy will constitute a core pillar of the play - intimacy in the light of celibacy, prostitution, and a waist-down paralized angry youngster.
So that´s what we have this far, we will keep you posted on the progress of the process, and will be posting some photo´s soon!
Love,

LLECA

Poesías desde Adentro

NADA ES ETERNO

Nunca vuelve para siempre
y en la luz visionaria tiembla
el ascenso del destino litigioso
delirante, cansado y en duda.

Cada ves más se agudiza
la espera del tentoso olvido
o las ganas de querernos
en esta trayectoria vital.

En las aletas del firmamento
la pista del vanidoso futuro
parece tomar fuerza y esperamos

DECIDE

Traté
de amarte
y amé.

Pensé
besarte
y amarte;

Y dije
en carta
alguna

Elije
Oh Marta
tu cuna.

Waswali Prison Water Well Project

Hello everybody!
We have great news to announce!! As part of our Project Prison Break we had applied in May 2010 to the Dutch Embassy´s small projects (PKP ODA) program to fund the revalidation of the prison´s water system.
Due to water shortages in the dry season, conditions of personal hygiene for all 800 inmates become precarious not being able to use more than four liters of water per day for showering, drinking, using the toilet, and washing their clothes as the water only comes once a week by truck from the city of Matagalpa. The funding from the Dutch Embassy is a USD 10,000 contract which will be directly invested in the prison´s second, abandoned, water well. Once this well is revitalized and equiped (the project is due to be finished end of March 2011) it will be able to provide the extra capacity needed so the other well doesn´t fall dry and the prison population can shower, use the bathroom, drink, and wash their clothes normally. Moreover, we will provide the prison population with tips and tricks how to use water more practically and responsibly during the dry season.
The water well project is a fantastic start of our struggle with Project Prison Break to improve the prison´s material conditions - thank you so very much Dutch Embassy, for the funding and also for all the great comments and suggestions we received in our first process of application for funds of this magnitude! Once the well is revitalized and equiped for the dry season, it will mean a considerable direct improvement of the prison population´s daily living conditions. An improvement of which we hope to be making many more with Project Prison Break!!! The cells, the school, the kitchen...!!

Managua Blues & Interview/Entrevista

Hello everybody!
Updating the blog, I´m posting the news of our October 15th 2010 fundraiser "Managua Blues: Lleca Fundraiser Festival" organised in the Schijnheilig, Amsterdam!
The fundraiser was a great succes: four rockbands, a theater duo and a visual artist performed generously on their own account throughout the night for 150 friends and visitors!! Cujo, Geyzer, De Gevoelige Drie, and Pattern Cutoff rocked the house while Toru&Noru shook the storage room with their violently silent theater performace, and Eli.o questioned and tickled the onlooker with her black humor artwork. We thank all of them for their fantastic input and presence at the fundraiser!! We also thank 1000x the venue, Schijnheilig, and their staff (above all Floris) for their great effort in hosting our fundraiser so magnificently!! It is an awesome underground culture location and we really really hope to be organising a second edition there in April 2011!
And foremost we would like to thank YOU for your thirsty livers and generous donations which helped us generate 570 euro´s :D Enough to be working at the penitentiary today - yep, just back from practice and writing from the internetcafé - forming and training the first Nicaraguan prison theater group Dinosaurios Teatro, and producing their first play "ASCO"!!
Before the doors opened at the fundraiser, Noticias (Dutch platform for news on Latin America) reporter Irene Pousse interviewed me, Julienne Weegels, at the Schijnheilig about our theater project in prison. The link eclosed in the title of this blog leads you to the page with the article (in Dutch) and video fragments they shot during the interview. Hope you enjoy! More photo´s of the fundraiser you can find on www.lleca.org or on our Facebook page "Lleca Teatro"! Have a great day!
Love,
LLECA
