Waswali Prison Water Well Project

Hello everybody!

We have great news to announce!! As part of our Project Prison Break we had applied in May 2010 to the Dutch Embassy´s small projects (PKP ODA) program to fund the revalidation of the prison´s water system.

Due to water shortages in the dry season, conditions of personal hygiene for all 800 inmates become precarious not being able to use more than four liters of water per day for showering, drinking, using the toilet, and washing their clothes as the water only comes once a week by truck from the city of Matagalpa. The funding from the Dutch Embassy is a USD 10,000 contract which will be directly invested in the prison´s second, abandoned, water well. Once this well is revitalized and equiped (the project is due to be finished end of March 2011) it will be able to provide the extra capacity needed so the other well doesn´t fall dry and the prison population can shower, use the bathroom, drink, and wash their clothes normally. Moreover, we will provide the prison population with tips and tricks how to use water more practically and responsibly during the dry season.

The water well project is a fantastic start of our struggle with Project Prison Break to improve the prison´s material conditions - thank you so very much Dutch Embassy, for the funding and also for all the great comments and suggestions we received in our first process of application for funds of this magnitude! Once the well is revitalized and equiped for the dry season, it will mean a considerable direct improvement of the prison population´s daily living conditions. An improvement of which we hope to be making many more with Project Prison Break!!! The cells, the school, the kitchen...!!

Managua Blues & Interview/Entrevista

Hello everybody!

Updating the blog, I´m posting the news of our October 15th 2010 fundraiser "Managua Blues: Lleca Fundraiser Festival" organised in the Schijnheilig, Amsterdam!

The fundraiser was a great succes: four rockbands, a theater duo and a visual artist performed generously on their own account throughout the night for 150 friends and visitors!! Cujo, Geyzer, De Gevoelige Drie, and Pattern Cutoff rocked the house while Toru&Noru shook the storage room with their violently silent theater performace, and Eli.o questioned and tickled the onlooker with her black humor artwork. We thank all of them for their fantastic input and presence at the fundraiser!! We also thank 1000x the venue, Schijnheilig, and their staff (above all Floris) for their great effort in hosting our fundraiser so magnificently!! It is an awesome underground culture location and we really really hope to be organising a second edition there in April 2011!

And foremost we would like to thank YOU for your thirsty livers and generous donations which helped us generate 570 euro´s :D Enough to be working at the penitentiary today - yep, just back from practice and writing from the internetcafé - forming and training the first Nicaraguan prison theater group Dinosaurios Teatro, and producing their first play "ASCO"!!

Before the doors opened at the fundraiser, Noticias (Dutch platform for news on Latin America) reporter Irene Pousse interviewed me, Julienne Weegels, at the Schijnheilig about our theater project in prison. Proceso de Montaje "ASCO"

Hola tod@s!

De noviembre 2010 a marzo 2011 estarémos entregados en lleno al proceso de montaje de "ASCO" con el grupo de teatro de internos Dinosaurios Teatro. De lunes a viernes damos forma física e intelectual a ésta obra, basada en el relato "La Metamorfósis" de Franz Kafka y "La Historia de Gaddi" del joven escritor y fotógrafo Oscar Duarte. El estreno de la obra está planificado para la última semana de marzo 2011 - fecha tentativa viernes 25. En cuanto se autoriza nuestra solicitud de tomar fotos y videos del proceso de montaje esperemos poder publicar aquí fotos de los talleres! Les mantendremos al tanto del proceso de montaje y el calendario de las presentaciones.

Hello Everyone!

November 2010 through March 2011 we will be completely focussed on the making of "ASCO" with the prison theater group Dinosaurios Teatro. Monday through Friday we´re giving this play - based on Kafka´s "Metamorphose" and "The story of Gaddi" by young writer and photographer Oscar Duarte - its intelectual barring and physical form. The premiére is planned for the last week of March 2011, tentative date Friday March 25th. We hope to publish photo´s of the workshops as soon as our permit is re-authorized and will keep you posted on the process and the presentation calendar!

Yesterday we finished making the video-synopsis of "The Toystore", presented by Dinosaurios Teatro! We hope that it arouses your curiosity for the grand premiére in October!!! With ¨The Toystore¨, based on the classic play "Antigone" and the past thirty years of Nicaraguan tragedies, we hope to conquest ourselves a place in the XXXVI Cervantino Callejero of the OPC-CLETA (one of the biggest international street theater festivals in the world) in Guanajuato, Mexico, this year!! *Keeping our fingers crossed!*
